One small step towards permaculture.
This morning I sowed the seeds for the chives which I will plant at the base of all the apple trees. They are good companions and the chives help the apple trees with apple scab and aphids as seen on The Romany Rest blog. As we have four trees and also a cordon of fourteen I will be needing a lot of chive plants. I also sowed some sorrel but not sure what that would be a companion to sorrel. It makes an addition to salad leaves adding a citrus flavour and it can also make a soup…now theres a thought. A dry day – time to dig leading to thoughts on Permaculture.
Getting the vegetable beds prepared is always done as and when the weather allows, and although we have had some rain and snow they are not too wet for digging. I have also been trying to sort out the old compost heap. I really would like to make it into a raised bed. At the moment it is full of bindweed and nettles, I really don’t mind the nettles to much but the bind weed is a plague and every piece has to be removed or else it just grows again. I wish I knew of some use for it, it would surely make me rich. One of the other fascinations I have at the moment is the concept of permaculture, so very eco friendly. Growing Lemon grass and other seedlings
The lemon grass that I bought in a supermarket has finally taken root! It took quite a bit longer than I thought it would to actually root but it is now planted up and I wait see if it will grow on to be a useful supply, oh I really hope it will. It is fantastic ingredient in the Tom Yam soup, and I can only believe that cut fresh will be even better. The chili seeds taken from one bought in a supermarket have sprouted and now on the second set of leaves, today I potted them on and so far they look fine. All in a day, ironing to the world of Twitter
What a strange day, re-decorating the bedroom, well, that’ll be some of it, shopping where I forgot the tomatoes. I have a brain like a sieve sometimes. A visit from a friend. Then finishing with the ironing, (completed, thank goodness). Giving me just enough time to check on tweets near and far. I love Twitter, it gives me an insight on the world. It’s full of information some good and very interesting some bad and can only be described as dull. For all that, I am a fan. When I was young we thought ourselves lucky if we had a pen pal to write to, now you can have thousands if you want, and write to people you would never have been able to reach with any other sort of media. … Read entire article »

It’s cold out there and the squash thinks so too..
Today I have had to utilise all of one huge squash aside of the bits the frost got to first. Boo.. Decided to make some soup, just an ordinary ‘run of the mill’ vegetable soup and then inspiration, yes… risotto . It was great, and will definately make it again! Now, must try to find a better way of storing our vegetable squash through the frost. This year I think I’ll try to make a wire cage and line with straw placed in the outside shed and see if that will work . Mr. Turnor’s at Bourne Sessions Potatoe Soup from the 1800′s
This is from a bygone age, a soup recipe that sounds like it might fit the bill for a modern day ‘Guy Fawkes’ fireworks party. It will serve over fifty people and as long as you eat meat it sounds a fantastic one to try. It was probably last used sometime in the early 1800′s in Bourne, Lincolnshire. If there are any takers….photo’s please! It also uses cereals to make it a more substantial soup and I’m sure it would cost a bit more than 4 shillings and 6 pence to make it now but never the less, it would still be an economical meal.
