Where did the sunshine go? Why is it on bank holidays the sun wont put it’s hat on and come out to play! Never mind we soldiered on and have managed to get a lot of the little jobs done.
We have opened a new bed, yes another one, we needed a bit more space to put the runner beans in so thought we would experiment with an visually pretty vegetable bed in which we will grow some runner beans , swiss chard and red lettuce. The Victorians grew runner beans as ornamentals and so will we but we will also enjoy the produce they will bring too.
The ground which was grass had not been dug in many years, so we have added some compost to help with conditioning it ready to plant a bit later in the year.
I potted up the chilies, red sorrel and some small peppers which were given to me by a friend. All I know about them is that they came from Latvia. It such fun when you have to wait and see what you will get. I love surprises!
The trees are all in blossom and looking beautiful, the fruit is starting to set on the apples and pears, as are the blueberries and currents . The new raspberries which were planted earlier in the year are now sprouting leaves and are looking good.
The scent from the Lilacs (Syringa) is wonderful just now and engulfs you as you past them. The Mock-orange (Philadelphus) which is just starting to bud announces that the garden will have its heavenly perfume very soon.
This week I also picked some asparagas from the garden. I will post a recipe using them in a quiche. It’s tasty and makes the most of the flavour.

Our lilacs here in northern New Brusnwick are about a month away from blooming, the Victoria day long weekend is coming and it usually rains and rain is in the forecast.
I was expecting soups recipe from soupmaker.co.uk but it’s a garden blog. Anyway…I love garden art.
