Potatoes Grown in a Container, the Grand Reveal!

summer-garden-053 This weekend we had the grand reveal of  the potatoes which we had grown in a container. It was really exciting to see how well or  maybe not… they had done. summer-garden-062 In early April we planted five Charlotte seed potatoes in a yellow tub using our own compost as it was there and available and apart from watering just left them on their own.

NB when planting the potatoes fill the container half full to start, then when the green shoots show add  more compost to fill the container.

On Fathers Day, (21st June in UK) so that would be about 11/12 weeks of growing time and the potatoes were beginning to surface so the waiting stopped and the weighing began. To our surprise they weighed in at around 5kg that’s 1kg per seed potato, more than we expected.

I can’t say that everyone will have the same success but if you don’t try you won’t know.  It’s been a fun thing to do.

We have some other varieties that have had the same conditions but were planted a little later so fingers crossed that we will see the same success again.

New potatoes at there best

I wanted to try this but didn’t get round to it. I guess its too late for this year but I’ll put it on the list of things to plant next year. Must be lovely to have freshly dug homegrown potatoes.

It’s was so easy and if you wanted you could still put some in ready for mid September. We are going to try and see if we can have new potatoes at Christmas if we keep them growing in containers in the shed.
