and the sun came out...

Today is the first day that it hasn’t rained or sleeted or snowed for …I can’t remember it’s been so long.  I have managed to give the Honeysuckle a hair cut and fix the climbing net on to the fence. Hopefully it will give the honeysuckle a better hold and stop it flopping about.
We have [...]

Nov 272009

Today has been beautiful outside, bright and dry and perfect for planting garlic. I have three different varieties to go out and hopefully they will all flourish and be ready from June onwards.
The varieties are Garlic Jolimont, Garlic Cloves Purple White and Garlic Illico, this one can be used as ‘green garlic’ from May onwards.  [...]

Picked from the garden today

Today we gathered these from the garden, they looked so beautiful I thought I would share them with you.
The chard is still growing and looking lovely, I picked it every couple of days and is one of our favourite vegetables.
The tomatoes are still cropping, I just cant believe it, it is amazing.
The carrots have been [...]

Autumn Raspberries

The last of the berries in the garden, these little red jewels are like bombs of flavour mixed in with Bramley apples. The raspberries turn the apple bright red and tastes absolutely delicious with a little sugar added, it is one of my favourite ways to use some of overwhelming harvest of apples.

Outside, Tomatoes in November!

I cant believe we are still picking tomatoes in November, its seems wrong somehow but there is no one in this house complaining. These plants were rescued from a garden centre, they were freebies left on a table for anyone to take, so we did.
We potted them on and although they have had the advantage [...]

Nasturtiums

These nasturtiums were planted in the early summer, they have flowered constantly and even survived the three weeks on their own whilst we were abroad. I have harvested the seed pods and pickled them to see if it’s true that they are a good substitute for capers.  Worth a try don’t you think?  As you [...]

The New Fruit Cage.

After much thought as to whether it would be a sensible option and being assured that the netting used would be to small for birds to get trapped we ordered a fruit cage.
We were  getting to the point where we either gave up trying to grow soft fruit or found a way to keep it.  [...]

Garlic

A couple of weeks back I dug up the garlic and left it in the shed to dried out.  I wanted to try and plait it so I could hang it in the kitchen ready for use.
Today I made my first attempt at plaiting having read up how to plait garlic on a blog by [...]

to harvest… yes!
I dug up the garlic, it has been much more successful this year so planting in November seems to work for me.
The Arran Pilot potatoes are just fabulous, as are the carrots (from the tubs and planters) and the lettuce that we sowed in August last year over wintered and is now at [...]

Potatoes Grown in a Container, the Grand Reveal!

This weekend we had the grand reveal of  the potatoes which we had grown in a container. It was really exciting to see how well or  maybe not… they had done. In early April we planted five Charlotte seed potatoes in a yellow tub using our own compost as it was there [...]
