Planting the Sugar Cane.
Its been a week of new things; I have planted my first sugar cane. It arrive fresh from a site on Ebay, a length of about 2 1/2 feet or 75cm. I cut it into three pieces leaving plenty of room for the shield like buds to sprout. It has to be kept warm and moist to shoot, so the radiator that wont turn down seems to have found a use. I am hoping it will live happily in the garden through the summer months once it is established along with the lemon grass which continues to grow and now has side shoots too! It’s all so exciting when new trials see success. We have also trialled many varieties of potatoes which are new to us, we would usually go … Read entire article »

All in a day, ironing to the world of Twitter
What a strange day, re-decorating the bedroom, well, that’ll be some of it, shopping where I forgot the tomatoes. I have a brain like a sieve sometimes. A visit from a friend. Then finishing with the ironing, (completed, thank goodness). Giving me just enough time to check on tweets near and far. I love Twitter, it gives me an insight on the world. It’s full of information some good and very interesting some bad and can only be described as dull. For all that, I am a fan. When I was young we thought ourselves lucky if we had a pen pal to write to, now you can have thousands if you want, and write to people you would never have been able to reach with any other sort of media. … Read entire article »

What’s the weight of a ‘quartem’
Today William Wright of Radio Lincolnshire, UK 94.90 fm (also known as mrwilliam on twitter) very kindly asked his audience if anyone knew what the weight of a ‘quartem’ was, alas not one listener out there seems to have a clue. Perhaps it should go to the eggheads of the world. Hey are I downcast …not at all I will use my powers of deduction and come to some conclusion. I much appreciated his attempt to answer the question. It’s cold out there and the squash thinks so too..
Today I have had to utilise all of one huge squash aside of the bits the frost got to first. Boo.. Decided to make some soup, just an ordinary ‘run of the mill’ vegetable soup and then inspiration, yes… risotto . It was great, and will definately make it again! Now, must try to find a better way of storing our vegetable squash through the frost. This year I think I’ll try to make a wire cage and line with straw placed in the outside shed and see if that will work . As always if anyone has any other tips they would care to share I would only be pleased to have your views. [Translate] … Read entire article »

Is it over yet?
It’s the season to be jolly, well that’s what we are told. Who tells us that, I want to know, do they know of the pressure cooker we all live in during the season to be ‘jolly’? I don’t think so! I look forward and there is the light at the end of the tunnel and it is ….. the celebration of the New Year, giving us all a fresh start which is full of hope and the relief of knowing yet another season to be ‘jolly’ has ended. It’s not bah, humbug to the jolliness, its bah, humbug to the rubbish, the commercialism, to the specials that aren’t, to the money making machine. The expectations of the New Year are that we will mostly fail to keep our resolutions but we give it … Read entire article »
