Planting the Sugar Cane.

Its been a week of new things; I have planted my first sugar cane. It arrive fresh from a site on Ebay, a length of about 2 1/2 feet or 75cm. I cut it into three pieces leaving plenty of room for the shield like buds to sprout. It has to be kept  warm and moist to shoot, so the radiator that wont turn down seems  to have found a use.  I am hoping it will live happily in the garden through the summer months once it is established along with the lemon grass which continues to grow and now has side shoots too! It’s all so exciting when new trials see success. We have also trialled many varieties of potatoes which are new to us, we would usually go … Read entire article »

Seedlings progress

The seedlings that were set in March are all growing on strongly, and have all been potted on to give them a little more room to grow, although the house is now looking something like a greenhouse as every window ledge seems to have some seedlings growing on it. The first photo’ show my Lemon grass, this was grown from a piece bought at the local supermarket and I can’t tell you how pleased I am to see it grow. The second shows some of the squashes in their recycled coffee cups, I just wash them and snip a few holes in the bottom and hey presto they are ready to use to pot up! The third show various tomatoes, some more lemon grass that’s not quite taken off yet, and some lovage, … Read entire article »

Growing Lemon grass and other seedlings

The lemon grass that I bought in a supermarket has finally taken root!  It took quite a bit longer than I thought it would to actually root but it is now planted up and I wait see if it will grow on to be a useful supply, oh I really hope it will. It is fantastic ingredient in  the Tom Yam soup, and I can only believe that cut fresh will be even better. The chili seeds taken from one bought in a supermarket have sprouted and now on the second set of leaves, today I potted them on and so far they look fine. Hopefully they will reproduce themselves or something resembling the original.  I’m doing the same with a ‘scotch bonnet’ chili too.  At this rate I will be … Read entire article »

Seeds to seedlings and Spring is on the way…

Today the first seedlings have appeared, aubergine Thai yellow egg,  aubergine Thai green pea and onion red baron  so now its fingers crossed now they can grow on into fine healthy plants.  Also,  as a bit of an experiment I took the seeds out of some supermarket bought chilies and dried them on some kitchen towel paper,  planted them on and they have produce seedlings.  I cant wait to see what the plants will be like. Maybe they wont come to much,  it’s a learning process which ever way it goes. I took a tip from  http://www.yougrowgirl.com/grow/lemongrass.php  and bought some lemon grass and put it in water to root, they are now slowly making roots so it will be interesting  to see how quickly it grows on. So now its back to … Read entire article »

Volcanic Tom Yam

This soup is  a panacea, a cure all, penicillin in the pot. This request is down the ‘hot and firery’ path. Since doing some research, there does seem to be the basic ingredients and then… well it s a mine field, personally i don’t eat meat so the pork or chicken is not going to go in my pot but you can easily incorporate these in yours, when you look at the fish its any and everything and i suppose is a matter of which you prefer. Prawns seem to be the more common so I have used this as the base of mine. You could try a firm fish such as monk fish or perhaps even crab claws or any combination. The amount of chili is also down to … Read entire article »
