I potted on some of the tomatoes, as they had outgrown the seedling paper pots and seedling trays.  To pot on I  have been using recycled coffee vending machine cups that I have washed and cut three holes in the bottom. They are big enough to let out any surplus water and will take most plants up to the planting out stage.  Of the tomato seeds planted most have done well, without too many losses. The Alicante  and Black Russian in particular have done well but also the smaller varieties such as Tiny Tim.

The potatoes planted early this month are starting to break through the earth, and are being banked up to encourage them further.

The carrots are now up and flourishing in the planters that we have used again this year. It seems to stop the carrot fly getting at them as they are about 18in above the ground.

The peas are almost all through, and will need some support soon.  I’m not sure whether to use some twigs, or  install a few lines of string for them.  Not being a fan of netting as the wildlife such as birds and mice  in the garden can get caught up in it.

All the seedlings have faired well and although the celery is still very tiny it is holding its own.  It was such a huge success last year that I not sure we can do as well again, but if you dont try you will never know.

The Pot Marigold seeds I set are peeping through too, they will play a major part in drawing in the Hoverflies which help so much in keep the aphids at bay. The Marigolds can  also  be eaten in salads hence the ‘Pot’ part of the name  and can be used in many other ways including costmetics, they also brighten up the dullest bed.
