May Bank Holiday

Where did the sunshine go?  Why is it on bank holidays the sun wont put it’s hat on and come out to play!  Never mind we soldiered on and have managed to get a lot of the little jobs done. We have opened a new  bed,  yes another one, we needed a bit more space to put the runner beans in so thought we would experiment with an visually pretty vegetable bed in which we will grow some runner beans , swiss chard and red lettuce.  The Victorians  grew runner beans as ornamentals and so will we but we will also enjoy the produce they will bring too. One small step towards permaculture.

This morning I sowed the seeds for the chives which I will plant at the base of all the apple trees. They are good companions and the chives help the apple trees with apple scab and aphids as seen on The Romany Rest blog.  As we have four trees and also a cordon of fourteen I will be needing a lot of chive plants.  I also sowed some sorrel but not sure what that would be a companion to sorrel. It makes an addition to salad leaves adding a citrus flavour and it can also make a soup…now theres a thought.
